The Rescue Center in Pheriche is run by volunteers. We met a lovely lady helping from Saskatchewan. Lesley carried some wound treatment supplies from Canada all the way up the mountain to donate here at the Center. They treat locals and also many Trekkers with altitude sickness. Two members of our team were treated here. They were both very lucky they had the rescue center to help them. It is a non-profit organization that is run through donations.
Debbie donated her JIM shirt and most of us signed it. We would leave our mark on the Trek at this small lodge in Pheriche where the owner who spoke excellent English liked to decorate the walls of his lodge with T-Shirts!!
Thibetan Bread at the lodge at Pheriche.
Preparing to leave Gorak Shep...note the kerchief on Ten Gruk Sherpa. It looked like it may rain today. It never did rain once!! We were very lucky as bad weather surrounded us but did not come our way. At this point we had heard that there had been no flights in to Lukla for the past few days. It was a concern as that small prop plane was our only way back to Kathmandhu. We had also heard about the plane crashing in to the mountain as it landed at Lukla. Noone was hurt but it was a looming thought on our minds. Never before had I wanted to leave somewhere fast enough!! Being at altitude makes you uncomfortable and I was ready to get down!! Some Trekkers waiting in Kathmandhu to start their Trek were stuck because the flights were not taking off. Some chose to be helicoptered in at their own expense to continue with their Trek. One of the problems with this approach is that you reach altitude too soon, you don't acclimatize and you get sick very fast. We would have to wait and see what our chances would be to get back to KTM.
